This is an excerpt from the reissue of "Bijutsu Kai," a collection of design patterns published by the Kyoto-based publishing house "Unnso-do" in the Meiji era (1900s), which was reissued around 1990. Despite being a reissue, the beauty of the hand-printed woodblock on washi paper gives it a charm that is absent in contemporary books. The designs featured in "Bijutsu Kai" are remarkable for their exquisite blend of Eastern and Western elements, which is hard to associate with designs from around 1900. This unique collection achieves a sophisticated form and color palette not typically found in classical patterns.
Originally, these were "pattern collections" created by unknown creators such as "designers" and "pattern designers." During the Meiji era, it was anonymous craftsmen who were actually engaged in designing in the manufacturing field. With the expansion of trade routes along with the laying of railways and the diversification of citizens' tastes, there was a growing need for innovative designs suitable for the new era, ranging from kimonos and ceramics to fans and insect cages. It was these individuals who felt compelled to exert their creativity. "Bijutsu Kai," which reached their hands every month, became a free source of designs by talented designers, enriching Japanese handicrafts with their designs.

As our products are shipped from Japan they may be subject to taxes and customs fees in the country of delivery. These costs are the customer’s responsibility.
For our customers in the USA:
Most packages with a declared value under $2000 USD will be cleared without any fees. (http://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/internet-purchases)
For our customers in Australia:
Orders below $1000 AUD are regarded as 'low-value imports' by Australian customs. As of 01 July 2018, customs duties may apply to any goods imported from overseas by consumers in Australia. For more information please visit the Australian customs website (http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Impo/Buyi).
For our customers in Canada:
Orders above $20 CAN require that you pay the applicable duties and the GST. For more information please visit the Canadian customs website (http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/postal-postale/dtytx-drttx-eng.html).
For our customers in the EU:
From 1 July 2021, import VAT is payable on all goods entering the EU, irrespective of their value. For goods with a value of more than €150, you will have to pay Customs Duty in addition to import VAT. The customs value on which Customs Duty is calculated is the cost of the goods plus transport (including postage), any insurance, and any handling charges to deliver the goods to the EU. The rate of Customs Duty that applies depends on the goods you import.
We understand customs fees are worrying for some of you. We hope you are reassured by the fact that, when buying on SOMOC, you are ordering directly from Japan- getting authentic and original Japanese items that are not easily found anywhere else.
EMS (JP Post shipped, delivered by your National Post) generally charges the required sum at delivery.
