This antique Byōbu screen paper is a rare and valuable piece of Japanese craftsmanship and history. Once part of a traditional byōbu (folding screen), this fragment has been preserved as a stunning work of abstract art, perfect for Japandi-style interiors.

Measuring an impressive 162.5 cm (5.3 feet) in height and 62.5 cm (2 feet) in width, it carries the essence of wabi-sabi aesthetics with its beautifully aged washi paper surface. One side features intricate geometric patterns, originally designed for interior decoration. However, from a modern perspective, the reverse side—covered with layered, hand-brushed records—offers an even more captivating visual experience. The calligraphy, likely from the Edo period, appears to be an old ledger, though its precise meaning remains a mystery, adding to its enigmatic charm.

Due to its age, the paper has natural creases and fold marks, as it was previously stored in an A3-size fold. These imperfections enhance its authenticity, making it a perfect statement piece for those who appreciate the beauty of imperfection and historic craftsmanship.

Display it as a wall hanging, frame it as abstract art, or incorporate it into a creative design project. This piece embodies Japan’s timeless aesthetic and cultural heritage, making it a striking addition to any interior

As our products are shipped from Japan they may be subject to taxes and to customs fees in the country of delivery. These costs are the customer’s responsibility.

For our customers in the USA:
Most packages with a declared value under $2000 USD will be cleared without any fees. (http://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/internet-purchases)

For our customers in Australia:
Australian customs consider orders below $1000 AUD as 'low-value imports'. As of 01 July 2018, customs duties may apply to any goods imported from overseas by consumers in Australia. For more information please visit the Australian customs website (http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Impo/Buyi).

For our customers in Canada:
Orders above $20 CAN require that you pay the applicable duties and the GST. For more information please visit the Canadian customs website (http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/postal-postale/dtytx-drttx-eng.html).

For our customers in the EU:
From 1 July 2021, import VAT is payable on all goods entering the EU, irrespective of their value. For goods with a value of more than €150, you will have to pay Customs Duty in addition to import VAT. The customs value on which Customs Duty is calculated is the cost of the goods plus transport (including postage), insurance, and handling charges to deliver the goods to the EU. The rate of Customs Duty that applies depends on the goods you import.

We understand that custom fees are worrying for some of you. We hope you are reassured that, when buying on SOMOC, you are ordering directly from Japan- getting authentic and original Japanese items that are not easily found anywhere else.

EMS (JP Post shipped, delivered by your National Post) generally charges the required sum at delivery.
