In Japan, there is an ancient culture of making Shimekazari to welcome Shinto deities. Rice straw is like a mother that has protected and nurtured rice for the agrarian people whose livelihood was based on rice cultivation. Because of this, the straw itself was also considered sacred. (In areas where it was difficult to grow rice, they also used other straw plants.) Apart from some broad similarities, the shapes of Shimekazari vary from region to craftsman. From ancient times to the present day, ordinary households decorate their entrance to the house to welcome the fresh new year. However, it can be used throughout the year in the sense of inviting good fortune and purifying the place.
